Background
Mandel was born at Munzkirchen in Austria in 1912 and joins the SS at the age of 26. Not only was she an Lagerfuhrerin (female commandant), but she eventually becomes a top ranking female official at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Because she was a woman, she could never be held at a level of respect among the Nazis as that of a man, but she impressed many with her sadistic nature and punishments, and even earned the nickname "The Beast" because of this.
